During any surgery, other factors such as antibiotics, rubber latex, and neuromuscular blocking agents are just as likely to trigger an anaphylactic reaction as an Anesthetic.

Allergies to Anesthesia are a severe problem. It may become difficult for an Anesthesiologist to observe the early symptoms of anaphylaxis as Anaphylactic symptoms can be hard to detect as they include light-headedness and shortness of breath, which are commonplace in Anesthesia treatments. Although some early signs of anaphylaxis are difficult to detect during Anesthesia, anesthesiologists are specially trained to recognise allergic reactions. Your anesthesiologist will quickly give the appropriate treatment if allergy symptoms are detected, such as bronchospasm, swelling, and hypotension. This treatment includes injection of epinephrine (or adrenaline), the insertion of a breathing tube, or intravenous fluids administration.

What if I suspect I am allergic to Anesthesia?

If you have experienced an allergy to anesthetics or any medications. In that case, you need to inform your doctor and tell your anaesthetist. This will ensure that the medicine you have an allergy to is not to be used in your treatment and will be equipped for an allergic reaction if one does occur.

Typically, in general, there are a variety of drugs given in anesthetics. If you have an allergic reaction during surgery, a test will be done afterwards to determine what caused the reaction.

How can I have surgery if I am allergic to Anesthesia?

Having an allergy to one Anesthetic drug does not mean you can never get any sort of anesthetic.

Suppose you or a family member has an allergic reaction to the surgery. In that case, you should discuss it with your doctor and have the test done to find out which exact substance or substances you are allergic to.
