FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

First Aid Course Experts’ Aged care course takes at least five in-person sessions, which are usually completed over the duration of a single week. This doesn’t include your online training or work experience.

The exact time it takes to finish the course relies on the student’s own skill and dedication to their at-home theory and their work components.

No. While some of this course is done online on the student’s own time, working in aged care requires skills that can only be learned through hands-on experience.

These include how to recognise healthy body systems, knowledge of how to prevent and control infections, and the ability to administer medication to clients, among many others.

Working with aged people can be challenging emotionally. But the rewards can outweigh the challenges for someone with a kind heart and a strong drive.

Aged care workers regularly face difficult situations due to the nature of their work. Their clients are often facing some of life’s most confronting moments. For example, one aspect of aged care is palliative care, where workers are constantly faced with death while helping patients and their loved ones through one of the most difficult times that they’ll experience. Similarly, aged care work can be challenging due to the necessity of being around people who are slowly losing their cognitive skills and their sense of identity.

With all that said, for someone willing and capable of facing up to these challenges, getting to support some of society’s most vulnerable people is its own reward.

Only if you work or are intending to work in aged are.

While you can help a family member or loved one who needs it without having an aged care certificate, it is not always a good idea. Unqualified care givers won’t be able to fully understand what is expected of them, their legal obligations, and the safe ways to work with older people.

Searching online is always the easiest way to find new opportunities to work or volunteer at nursing homes, hospices, retirement communities, and other similar facilities. Volunteering is also a great way to get started and can lead to professional opportunities further down the line.

The organisation you perform your work experience at may also be able to offer you work, or at least point you in the right direction. Your course trainer may also be able to help you find opportunities.

If you already work in aged care or are in a job where taking this course can be seen as either upskilling or necessary for keeping your position, then you can deduct the cost of an aged care course from your taxes. If you want to know more, talk to your accountant or tax expert.
